ISA - TONGJI UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME

In a bid to further strengthen the existing cooperation with the International Seabed Authority, China has granted funding to support between 3 - 5 candidates from developing countries in the field of marine sciences to pursue Masters or Doctorate degrees in Marine Science at the Tongji University in Shanghai, China.

Tongji University, which is one of the leading universities in China, has been allocated a quota of 30 places under the Chinese Government Scholarship Programme to independently recruit master’s and doctorate degree candidates. Under the terms of the arrangement with the Authority, three to five such places will be made available to candidates to be jointly selected by the Authority and Tongji University (School of Ocean and Earth Science).

Applicants for the Masters degrees under the ISA-Tongji University scholarships programme must have a bachelor’s degree in geology, chemistry or biology, must be under the age of 35. Applications for the Doctoral degrees must also have a Masters degree in geology, chemistry or biology and must be under the age of 40. Applicants must be nationals of developing countries.

Application deadlines have now been extended to 31 January 2011  and must be submitted through the Authority. The Authority will compile a list of all qualified applicants, from which a shortlist will be drawn up on the basis of the qualification standards and admission requirements agreed with Tongji University. The shortlist will be submitted to Tongji University, whereupon Tongji University will make the final selection of the successful candidates.

Full details of the qualification standards and admission requirements, together with links to the relevant application forms, are as follows:

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

  1. International students studying in China are not eligible, and
  2. International students from joint-programs between China (Tongji University) and overseas organizations are not eligible, either.
  3. Applicants must be non-Chinese nationals and in good health.
  4. The applicants must fill out the forms offered and provide the following materials (in duplicate).

A. Master candidates      

  • Bachelor’s degree in geology, chemistry or biology, and under the age of 35.
  • Log on the homepage of the China Scholarship Council (http://en.csc.edu.cn), download and fill out the Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarship (“Studying in China/Download Application Forms”);
  • Bachelor’s Diploma (notarized photocopy),
  • Original or notarized transcripts of all undergraduate courses,
  • A study or research plan (no less than 800 words) in Chinese or in English.
  • 2 letters of recommendation by two professors;
  • Photocopy of valid passport;
  • The catalogs and abstracts of published academic papers.

B. Doctorate candidates

  • Besides all the application, materials needed are the same as that of the Masters’, and;
  • Master’s degree in geology, chemistry or biology, and under the age of 40;
  • 1-2 academic dissertations, articles or outlines of dissertation

C. The status of scholarship students during their stay
     in China

  1. Waiver of fees on registration, tuition, laboratory experiment,  internship, basic learning materials and accommodations;
  2. Criteria of living allowance (Master: 1700RMB/Mon; Doctor: 2000RMB/Mon, respectively). New students will get a one-off settlement subsidy upon arrival in China.  CNY 1,500 Yuan for a new student who will study in China for one academic year or more
  3. Waiver of fees for outpatient medical service, comprehensive medical Insurance and Benefit Plan for international students in China;

E. Application Procedures

ALL applications MUST be submitted to the International Seabed Authority. The Authority will then compile a shortlist of the applications and then forward to Tongji University for the selection of the final successful candidates.
