On Tuesday, 24 July 2012, the Assembly of the International Seabed Authority met in a special session to commemorate the signing of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Speakers at the morning session included Mr. Milan J. N. Meetarbhan (Mauritius), President of the Assembly; Mr Nii A Odunton, Secretary-General of the International Seabed Authority; Mrs. Simpson Miller, Prime Minister of host country Jamaica; Mr. Serguei Tarassenko, Director United Nations’ Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea of the Office of Legal Affairs / Office of Legal Affairs on behalf of H.E. Ban Ki-Moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations; Former Secretary-General Satya Nandan (Fiji); Ambassador C.W. Pinto (Sri Lanka) who chaired the Working Group on principles of the seabed regime and conditions for exploration and exploitation in the Area (1975); Judge Jose Lui Jesus who chaired the Preparatory Commission for the ISA and ITLOS (1987-1994); and Jean-Pierre Lévy, former secretary of the First Committee of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Representatives of the five Regional Groups - Brazil, China, Germany, Namibia and the Russian Federation - also spoke at the session.

The afternoon session speakers were Ambassador Raymond Wolfe, the Permanent Representative of Jamaica to the ISA and Caitlyn Antrim, Executive Director, Rule of Law Committee for the Oceans and former US Deputy representative to UNCLOS.

At the end of the session, the Assembly was shown the Volcanoes of the Deepsea, a film by Peter Rona, Professor of Marine Geology and Geophysics, Institute of Marine and Coastal Science, Rutgers University.
