Seminario de Sensibilización, 17-19 de marzo de 2015, Sudáfrica

Desde el 2007, la Autoridad Internacional para los Fondos Marinos, comenzó un nuevo programa de seminarios regionales de sensibilización sobre cuestiones relacionadas con la Convención de 1982 de las Naciones Unidas sobre el Derecho del Mar, el trabajo de la Autoridad y sobre recursos minerales marinos.

Los seminarios reúnen expertos de la comunidad jurídica internacional científica y los funcionarios de los gobiernos nacionales y regionales, científicos, investigadores y académicos, para discutir la investigación científica sobre los minerales marinos y proponer mecanismos para mejorar la cooperación regional en materia de investigación científica y el desarrollo de los minerales marinos.

Los temas que se tratarán en el Seminario de Sensibilización marzo 2015 en Sudáfrica incluyen el papel y las funciones de la Autoridad, el estado del marco legal para las actividades en la zona, los recursos minerales en la zona, las perspectivas para el desarrollo de sulfuros polimetálicos en las cordilleras del Atlántico Sur y el Océano Índico, el Fondo de Dotación de la Autoridad, las actividades de exploración en la zona Clarion-Clipperton, perspectivas ambientales en la minería marina en la región del Sur de África y la protección y preservación del medio ambiente marino de las actividades en la zona.
