ISA side event at the 2024 Ocean Decade Conference | Leveraging knowledge, innovation and empowerment in deep-sea research in support of the stewardship of the Area for the benefit of humankind

12 Apr 2024 - 12 Apr 2024

Barcelona, Spain

PROGRAMME

The International Seabed Authority (ISA) is participating in the UN Ocean Decade Conference between 10 and 12 April 2024 in Barcelona.

In partnership with the governments of Argentina, Bangladesh and the Cook Islands, as well as the National Oceanography Centre from the United Kingdom and the National Marine Biodiversity Institute from Korea, ISA is leading the side event on Friday, 12 April, from 08:30 to 09:45 in the meeting room 133-134 Southern Ocean of the International Barcelona Convention Centre.

This is an in-person side event and pre-registration is not necessary.

Objectives

This side event will provide a platform to take stock of the progress made under the ISA’s mandate to promote marine scientific research. It will evaluate the lessons learned during its implementation and identify potential areas of collaboration that could further contribute to the United Nations Ocean Decade in the years ahead. These insights will inform a comprehensive report detailing ISA’s contribution to the scientific objectives of the United Nations Decade. By fostering collaborative research through international partnership for the benefit of humankind and charting a road map for future contributions, ISA aims to support the goals of the United Nations Ocean Decade fully.

The objectives of this side event include increasing the public, decision makers and scientists’ awareness of the specific mandates and responsibilities of ISA in relation to deep-sea research in areas beyond national jurisdictions and further mobilizing all relevant stakeholders actively engaged in deep-sea research, sustaining the momentum for science, technology development and capacity development in support of sustainable ocean governance and management. Finally, the side event will shape a vision for the next era of scientific deep-sea research towards further consolidation of the Action plan of the International Seabed Authority in support of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development as the global framework informing deep-sea research activities in areas beyond national jurisdictions.
