The International Seabed Authority (ISA) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia successfully held a virtual national capacity building workshop to review the environmental components of the legal framework governing activities carried out in the Area.

Today, the International Seabed Authority (ISA) successfully concluded a three-day online workshop on Enhancing Image-based Biodiversity Assessments to Advance Deep-Sea Taxonomy. The workshop, which was organized with the support of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries of Korea and the National Marine Biodiversity Institute of Korea, involved over 120 participants from 41 countries.

ANNOUNCEMENT

Applications are now open for a deep-sea taxonomy postdoctoral fellowship with Ifremer for candidates from developing States Members of the International Seabed Authority (ISA). The 18-month fellowship position will focus on developing and testing new methods and technologies for deep-sea species identification and is expected to begin in February 2022.

Today, the International Seabed Authority (ISA) hosted the first webinar of a new series called ISA Marine Scientific Research Information Series for Africa.

The webinar series was created specifically for ISA African Member States and other stakeholders in the region and seeks to strengthen their capacity to conduct research in the Area, a need identified by them during a workshop organized by ISA in February 2020.

On 13 September 2021, the Legal and Technical Commission of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) confirmed the selection of candidates for four online training opportunities provided by China Minmetals Corporation (CMC) in accordance with its obligations under its exploration contract for polymetallic nodules with ISA.

ANNOUNCEMENT

The deadline to apply for 14 online training opportunities provided by China Ocean Mineral Resources R & D Association (COMRA) for candidates from developing States Members of ISA has been extended to 8 October 2021 instead of 10 August.

The placements are being offered in accordance with COMRA’s obligations under its contracts with ISA for exploration of polymetallic nodules (PMN, 10 placements) and polymetallic sulphides (PMS, 4 placements).

The deadline for nominations for nine online training opportunities provided by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) of the Government of India for candidates from developing States Members of ISA has been extended to 11 October 2021 instead of 5 August.

The placements are being offered by MoES in accordance with its obligations under its exploration contract for polymetallic nodules with ISA.

The Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the International Seabed Authority (ISA), H.E. Mr. Sergey Petrovich, presented his credentials to ISA Secretary-General, H.E. Mr. Michael W. Lodge, during a ceremony held today in Kingston, Jamaica.

Ambassador Petrovich is a career diplomat who joined the Russian diplomatic service in 1993. He is Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Jamaica and the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to ISA.
