Applications are now open for one (1) three-month virtual internship for candidates from developing States Members of the International Seabed Authority (ISA). The placement is provided by the Ocean Mineral Singapore Pte. Ltd. (OMS) in accordance with its obligations under its exploration contract for polymetallic nodules with ISA.
ISA is calling for candidates with a Master’s degree in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering, or at least a Upper Second Class Honors degree or equivalent in a similar discipline. Candidates must have a strong interest in doing research in the topic described. The successful candidate should possess a good command of English.
The three-month virtual internship will be provided by the National University of Singapore (NUS) between May and August 2022 (Exact start date TBD). The selected intern will work with NUS Acoustic Research Laboratory (ARL) to improve existing Machine Learning (ML) based modelling of the spatial distribution of nodule parameters by tapping into more powerful ANN architectures and modelling techniques. These include, but are not limited to, using the power of probabilistic ML to quantify uncertainty of model predictions, and trying to model more element percentages with a view towards commercial feasibility studies. These approaches will aim to use the limited dataset available efficiently to draw inferences about the modelled region of interest.
One of the Voluntary Commitments made by the ISA at the UN Ocean Conference 2017 was “Enhancing the role of Women in Deep-Sea Research through capacity building” – we therefore strongly encourage suitably qualified females to apply for these training opportunities.

All contractors with ISA have a legal obligation to provide and fund training opportunities for personnel from developing States and those of ISA.
The legal basis for the requirement stems from the provisions of UNCLOS and the 1994 Agreement and is set out in the standard terms of contracts. Its purpose is to ensure that personnel from developing States are provided with appropriate operational expertise to enable them to participate in deep-seabed mining.
