The Legal and Technical Commission of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) finalized on 20 July 2021 the selection of the five candidates from developing States Members of ISA who will benefit from a training opportunity provided by the Institut Français de Recherche pour l’Exploitation de la Mer (Ifremer) in accordance with its obligations under its contract with ISA for the exploration for polymetallic nodules in the Area.

The five selected candidates are:

  • Ms. Nora Sharifah from Malaysia
  • Mr. Caio Cesar-Ribeiro from Brazil
  • Mr. Otmane Sarti from Morocco
  • Ms. Heba M.E.D. Moustafa from Egypt
  • Ms. Ana Karoline Frutuoso de Ávila from Brazil

All five candidates will be invited to participate in the 16th edition of the Deep-Sea Biology Symposium from 12 to 17 of September 2021 in Brest, France.

All contractors with ISA have a legal obligation to provide and fund practical training opportunities for personnel from developing States and those of ISA, including the participation of such personnel in all activities in the Area which are covered by the contract.

The legal basis for the requirement stems from the provisions of UNCLOS and the 1994 Agreement and is set out in the standard terms of exploration contracts signed with ISA.
