The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Republic of Korea (MOF-ROK) in accordance with the contract for the exploration for polymetallic nodules with the International Seabed Authority, is offering one (1) 3-month internship placement to candidates from developing states under its 2019 training programme.

One (1) candidate in the field of United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), law, marine policy or related fields with an emphasis on deep seabed mining will be provided with the opportunity to work closely with the Science and Policy Team at Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) for three months beginning in October 2019.

Candidates must meet the following requirements:

  1. Education: A qualified bachelor or master's degree in the field UNCLOS; Law; Marine Policy or an equivalent educational background;
  2. Language: sufficient knowledge of English for daily conversion and training;
  3. Age: must be under 45 years old.

The trainee shall sign a confidentiality agreement with MOF-ROK and will receive a certificate upon completion of the training. A report on the outcome of the training is required to be submitted to MOF-ROK and the Authority.

MOF-ROK will cover all the relevant costs including: ♦ transportation costs accrued by trainees pursuant to their participation in the internship ♦ accommodations and meals ♦ medical insurance ♦ and other incidental expenses that might arise during the training period.

Applications should be submitted, in one of the official languages of the International Seabed Authority to training@isa.org.jm by the 2 September 2019 deadline either through:

Candidates, beginning in July 2019, will have an opportunity to work closely with scientists at the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) to do laboratory analyses (geological, chemical and biological parameters) of environmental samples collected from the Korean contract area.  

Candidates must meet the following requirements:

1.        Education: A qualified bachelor or master's degree in the field of ocean science and biology; or an equivalent educational background;

2.        Language: sufficient knowledge of English for daily conversion and training;

3.        Good mental and physical health suitable to work in the land-based lab;

4.        Age: must be under 45 years of age.

If selected, the trainee will be required to submit a physical examination report, signed by licensed physician, stating that the trainee is physically fit for the internship training.  

Trainees shall sign a confidentiality agreement with MOF-ROK and will receive certificates on completion of the training. A report on the outcome of the training is also to be submitted to MOF-ROK and to the Authority.

MOF-ROK will cover all the relevant costs including: ♦ transportation costs (round-trip economy class) accrued by trainees pursuant to their participation in the internship programme♦ accommodations and meals ♦ medical insurance♦ and other incidental expenses that might arise during the training period.

The cruise will be organized by the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) and is planned between May and June 2019 for approximately 30 days onboard “R/V Isabu”. The survey will be focused on geological and biological sampling and the collection of environmental baseline data in the Central Indian Ridge.

Two (2) six-month internship opportunities (on-land) where candidates will have an opportunity work closely scientists at KIOST to do laboratory analyses (geological, chemical and biological parameters) of environmental samples collected from the Korean Contract Area.

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Republic of Korea (MOF) in accordance with its contract for polymetallic sulphides exploration with the International Seabed Authority, is offering two (2) at-sea, on-board training places for candidates from developing states, in the fields of Geology and Geophysics. The cruise will be organized by the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) and is planned between June and August, 2017, for about 30 days.

The survey will focus on geological sampling and high-resolution topographic mapping using a deep-tow side scan sonar system.

Candidates must meet the following requirements:

  1. Education: hold a bachelor or master’s degree in the field of geology, geophysics or have equivalent educational background;
  2. Language: sufficient knowledge of English for daily conversation and training;
  3. Health: good mental and physical health suitable for work at sea;
  4. Age: under 45 years of age; and
  5. Other: seagoing experience (preferred but not a requirement).
