JSC Yuzhmorgeologiya of the Russian Federation, under its contract with the International Seabed Authority, for the exploration for polymetallic nodules, is offering six (6) training places for candidates from developing States. The training course is divided into two parts:

Part 1: theoretical course at St. Petersburg State University (SPSU) for approximately 2 weeks during the period October-November 2018. The curriculum will include:

  • Geology and mineral resources of the international seabed area;
  • Polymetallic nodules deposits;
  • Techniques, equipment and technologies for polymetallic nodules exploration; and
  • Geological - economic assessment of polymetallic nodules deposits.      

Part 2: at-sea training, a scientific cruise on board the RV “GELENDZHIK” in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone of the Pacific Ocean Duration: 60 days, projected cruise date: 4th quarter of 2018 – 2nd quarter of 2019.

  • Trainees will participate in geological and geophysical work with opportunities to collect field samples.

In addition to the direct cost of training, the Contractor undertakes to cover the following costs: ♦ Travel to and from Saint Petersburg; ♦ Accommodation and meal in Saint Petersburg; ♦ transportation to and from the research vessel’s ports; ♦ Accommodation and meals while on-board the RV “GELENDZHIK”.

NB. There will be no education grant and/or stipend paid to candidates at any stage of the training.

Candidates must meet the following requirements: 

  1. Education: education or work experience preferably in the field of Marine Geological Research;
  2. Language: Fluency in  English is compulsory, basic knowledge of Russian is desirable;   
  3. If selected for the training:  Proof of valid medical certificates which attest to fitness for at-sea conditions;  and Proof of insurance for the whole duration of training with coverage of no less than 30,000 euros

The trainees will receive certificates upon completion of the training programme. The trainees will be required to provide reports on the outcomes of their training to the Contractor and to the Authority. Additionally, each trainee will be required to submit a report five years after completion of the training and give an assessment of the application of course contents in their current activity.
