PRESS RELEASE

Following communications held with the President of the Assembly and the President of the Council of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) for the 26th session, the Secretariat of ISA informed on Friday 17 September all Members and observers of ISA of the new schedule for the meetings of the twenty-sixth session of the Council and the Assembly.

The meetings will take place in person at the Jamaica Conference Center in Kingston as follows:

Today, the International Seabed Authority (ISA) hosted the first webinar of a new series called ISA Marine Scientific Research Information Series for Africa.

The webinar series was created specifically for ISA African Member States and other stakeholders in the region and seeks to strengthen their capacity to conduct research in the Area, a need identified by them during a workshop organized by ISA in February 2020.

ANNOUNCEMENT

On 13 September 2021, the Legal and Technical Commission of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) confirmed the selection of candidates for four online training opportunities provided by China Minmetals Corporation (CMC) in accordance with its obligations under its exploration contract for polymetallic nodules with ISA.

ANNOUNCEMENT

The deadline to apply for 14 online training opportunities provided by China Ocean Mineral Resources R & D Association (COMRA) for candidates from developing States Members of ISA has been extended to 8 October 2021 instead of 10 August.

The placements are being offered in accordance with COMRA’s obligations under its contracts with ISA for exploration of polymetallic nodules (PMN, 10 placements) and polymetallic sulphides (PMS, 4 placements).

ANNOUNCEMENT

The deadline for nominations for nine online training opportunities provided by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) of the Government of India for candidates from developing States Members of ISA has been extended to 11 October 2021 instead of 5 August.

The placements are being offered by MoES in accordance with its obligations under its exploration contract for polymetallic nodules with ISA.

The Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the International Seabed Authority (ISA), H.E. Mr. Sergey Petrovich, presented his credentials to ISA Secretary-General, H.E. Mr. Michael W. Lodge, during a ceremony held today in Kingston, Jamaica.

Ambassador Petrovich is a career diplomat who joined the Russian diplomatic service in 1993. He is Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Jamaica and the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to ISA.

ANNOUNCEMENT

Applications are now open for seven (7) training opportunities for candidates from developing States Members of the International Seabed Authority (ISA). The deadline for applications for three scholarships to attend the University of the Pacific campus in Fiji provided by Marawa Research and Exploration Ltd (Marawa) and Nauru Ocean Resources Inc (NORI) as well as for an at-sea engineering training opportunity provided by NORI has been extended to 27 September instead of 5 July and 16 June 2021, respectively.

The Legal and Technical Commission of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) finalized on 20 July 2021 the selection of the five candidates from developing States Members of ISA who will benefit from a training opportunity provided by the Institut Français de Recherche pour l'Exploitation de la Mer (Ifremer) in accordance with its obligations under its contract with ISA for the exploration for polymetallic nodules in the Area.

The Permanent Representative of Namibia to the International Seabed Authority (ISA) and to the United Nations, H.E. Mr. Neville Melvin Gertze, presented his credentials to ISA Secretary-General, H.E. Mr. Michael W. Lodge, during a virtual ceremony held on Wednesday.

Ambassador Gertz is a career diplomat with over thirty years of experience. He has been the Permanent Representative of Namibia to the United Nations in New York since 2016 and became Permanent Representative to ISA in May 2021.
