The International Seabed Authority (ISA) has launched two art competitions to celebrate the deep sea on World Oceans Day 2021. World Ocean Day takes place on 8 June each year as a global celebration of the ocean, marine life and all ocean activities. World Oceans Day was first declared at the 1992 Global Forum in Rio de Janeiro, with the aim to bring the ocean to the center of global discussions and policy decision-making processes, and to strengthen the voice of ocean and coastal constituencies worldwide. For the United Nations and its partners, World Oceans Day is a day for scientists, policymakers and citizens to grow closer and interact around the key and emerging challenges our ocean faces today.
The theme for 2021 is “The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods.” To mark this day, ISA is launching two World Oceans Day art competitions on the theme “creatures of the deep!”
The competitions are directed at two different audiences. First, the ISA is inviting all students registered in an elementary school in Jamaica to participate in the local art competition by submitting drawings or paintings depicting “Creatures of the deep” (imaginary or real). Second, ISA is calling for participants worldwide from age 16 up to submit drawings, paintings or digital designs depicting “Creatures of the deep” (imaginary or real) for the international art competition. The selected artworks will be used to develop ISA’s 2021 Greeting card and calendar.
Final designs should be submitted via email to email@example.com by Friday, 14 May 2021 using the subject: “WOD Local Art Competition” or “WOD International Art Competition.” Within the body of the email, provide your contact details, including full name, age, school (local competition), and country.
