Nori 2020 Training

Applications are now open for four at-sea placement opportunities with Nauru Ocean Resources Inc. (NORI) as part of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) contractor training programme. Nauru nationals are encouraged to apply.

ISA is calling for Bachelor, Master or PhD graduates in geology, engineering or other relevant degree or background to take part in NORI’s offshore campaign which aims to collect a bulk sample of polymetallic nodules to further advance NORI’s onshore processing programme.

The offshore exploration campaign is being held in partnership with Maersk Supply Services and will be conducted within the NORI contract area in the Clarion Clipperton Zone (CCZ). The port of departure is San Diego (USA) and the campaign is anticipated to last approximately 24 days.

The campaign is scheduled to occur during the first quarter of 2020, exact dates will be confirmed with selected candidates. Applications must be submitted by Friday, 6 December 2019.

The contractor training programme is offered as part of ISA’s mandate under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) to promote and encourage marine scientific research. Under UNCLOS, ISA contractors are required to provide and fund practical, hands-on programmes for trainees from developing member States in activities in the Area covered by the contract.

Over the last six years, 145 placements have been awarded as part of the training programme, including: at-sea training, Master and PhD programmes, dredging seminars, taxonomy workshops, engineering courses, legal fellowships and internships.
