The deadline for applications for three scholarships to attend the University of the Pacific campus in Fiji provided by Marawa Research and Exploration Ltd (Marawa) and Nauru Ocean Resources Inc (NORI) as well as for an at-sea engineering training opportunity provided by NORI has been extended to 27 September instead of 5 July and 16 June 2021, respectively.

The International Seabed Authority (ISA) will be receiving applications from qualified candidates from developing States Members of ISA for the following opportunities:

  • Two scholarships provided by Marawa for an undergraduate degree in marine science, geology or engineering. At least one scholarship will be reserved for a woman. Please click here for more information and to apply.
  • One scholarship provided by NORI for a master’s degree (12-18 months) in marine management, biology, environmental science, marine science, Earth sciences, geosciences or geology. Please click here for more information and to apply.
  • Two at-sea engineering placements provided by NORI to assist with the testing of its nodule collection and riser system during two different expeditions in the Atlantic in January – February 2022 and in the Pacific in June – August 2022. Please click here for more information and to apply.

All contractors with ISA have a legal obligation to provide and fund practical training opportunities for personnel from developing States and those of ISA, including the participation of such personnel in all activities in the Area which are covered by the contract.

The legal basis for the requirement stems from the provisions of UNCLOS and the 1994 Agreement and is set out in the standard terms of exploration contracts signed with ISA.
