High Level Workshop: 16 -18 May 2019 – Pretoria, South Africa
What are the potential benefits for African States in increasing their participation in deep-seabed exploration activities? Why is it important for African experts to contribute to the development of key legal instruments and measures such as draft regulations for deep seabed mining and the establishment of marine protected areas in the international seabed area?
These are some of the key questions that the International Seabed Authority (ISA) and the Government of the Republic of South Africa will discuss at a joint high-level workshop organised in the context of the Africa’s Deep-Seabed Resources (ADSR) project (#OceanAction16374) that will be held in Pretoria from 16 to 18 May.
Held over three days, the workshop aims to foster international and regional cooperation to promote the sustainable development of Africa’s deep seabed resources in support of Africa’s Blue Economy. The workshop will bring together key stakeholders including official representatives of Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, South Africa and Zambia; as well as African experts on the law of the sea and mining issues.
