The International Seabed Authority (ISA) is pleased to launch Deep Dive, its new e-learning platform entirely dedicated to addressing both technical and scientific aspects of the legal regime set out in Part XI of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the 1994 Implementation Agreement and the rules, regulations and procedures adopted by ISA for activities in the international seabed area (the Area).

The Deep Dive e-learning programme builds on the exclusive body of expertise and experience of deep-seabed specialists. It is an indispensable tool for those with established or emerging careers in the deep seabed and related disciplines and those working in the sustainable development of the ocean and its resources. It is designed to enhance the capacity of government officials and practitioners from Member States, young graduates, personnel of partner institutions and other stakeholders to understand and implement the legal regime of the Area and the different elements pertaining to the conduct of activities in the Area.

ISA is calling for applications until 17 September 2023 to join Dive 1, the first level of the Deep Dive curriculum. Dive 1 will guide trainees through the key features of Part XI of UNCLOS and the 1994 Agreement setting out the regime for the Area and activities to be conducted, the concept of the common heritage of humankind, the role and functions and the mandate of ISA as well as the building blocks to ensure the stewardship and sustainable development of the Area and its resources.

Interested participants should apply through the Deep Dive registration page until 17 September 2023. Successful candidates will be notified by 30 September 2023 and granted access to the Deep Dive platform from 2 October 2023.
