On 14 July 2022, the Legal and Technical Commission of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) confirmed the selection of six (6) candidates for internship opportunities provided by L’Institut Français de Recherche pour l’Exploitation de la Mer (Ifremer) in accordance with its obligations under its exploration contract for polymetallic sulphides with ISA.

The selected candidates are:

  1. Ms. Chidinma Jecinta Nwoko from Nigeria
  2. Mr. Thamsanqa Wanda from South Africa
  3. Mr. Kiamuke Itiowe from Nigeria
  4. Mr. Francis Ngonyo Gandi from Kenya
  5. Ms. Ndeenda Ekandjo from Namibia
  6. Mr. Solomon Mordi from Nigeria

The selected candidates will participate in the 4th Marine Imaging Workshop 2022. This training will be held over a five-day period in Brest, France from 3 to 7 October 2022.

All contractors with ISA have a legal obligation to provide and fund practical training opportunities for personnel from developing States and those of ISA, including the participation of such personnel in all activities in the Area which are covered by the contract.

The legal basis for the requirement stems from the provisions of UNCLOS and the 1994 Agreement and is set out in the standard terms of exploration contracts signed with ISA.
