The International Seabed Authority (ISA) is holding, for the first time ever, an international workshop on “Capacity development, resources and needs assessment” at its headquarters in Kingston, Jamaica, from 10 to 12 February 2020.
Senior government officials, contractors, representatives from international and regional organizations, academic institutions, scientific groups and former trainees will gather at Jamaica Conference Centre, to discuss a review undertaken by the Secretariat on the 25-year implementation by ISA, of capacity-building programmes and activities. This will also provide the opportunity for participants discuss the best methodology to follow to identify the priority needs of developing States, including Small Island Developing States (SIDS), Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Land Locked Developing Countries (LLDCs).
In-line with the International Day of Women and Girls in Science that is celebrated on 11 February 2020, the workshop will also create the enabling conditions to discuss how to maximize current actions to enhance the participation of women from developing States in ocean science and particularly, in deep-sea research.
