ISA SG with Myanmar Suan Gauk

The Republic of the Union of Myanmar offered a contribution to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) at a ceremony led by Ambassador Hau Do Suan, Permanent Representative of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar to the United Nations in New York, on 3 April.

To mark the occasion, the Ambassador presented ISA Secretary-General Mr. Michael W. Lodge with a Myanmar Suang Gauk (harp) – the key national cultural instrument of Myanmar, to be displayed at ISA’s 25th Anniversary commemorative exhibition during its annual session in Kingston, Jamaica in July 2019.

Expressing his gratitude to Myanmar, Mr Lodge underscored the important contribution this Member has made to the work of ISA over the last 25 years towards advancing the sustainable development of mineral resources in the international seabed area for the benefit of mankind.

“We are deeply grateful to Myanmar for this generous contribution to our upcoming 25th Anniversary exhibition,” said Mr. Lodge. “As Vice-Chair of the ISA Finance Committee and a signatory to the UN Convention of the Law of the Sea since 1996, Myanmar has been a long-standing supporter of the work of ISA and we look forward to continuing our productive relationship,” he added.

As part of its partnership with Myanmar, ISA will hold a capacity building workshop in Nay Py Daw in September 2019. The workshop will bring together regional government officials, representatives of international and regional organizations, policy and legal experts, scientists, researchers and academics to discuss areas of cooperation in the field of marine mineral research with a view to identifying how to strengthen regional cooperation.
