Nominations are open for the 2023 Edition of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) Secretary-General’s Award for Excellence in Deep-Sea Research.

Launched at the ISA Assembly in July 2018, the Award recognizes and encourages the achievements of young researchers from developing countries who have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of scientific knowledge of the deep-sea environment or the development of environmentally sustainable regulatory frameworks. This unique initiative has been supported by Monaco since 2018, and Nauru Ocean Resources Inc. (NORI) and Tonga Offshore Minerals Ltd. (TOML) since 2020.

The awardee will receive a cash prize of USD4,000 and other benefits. The awardee will also have the opportunity to participate in a environmental and exploration campaign in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone in the Pacific Ocean in September-November 2023 and actively contribute to the diverse science and research programmes on board the vessel.

The Secretary-General’s Award is one of the voluntary commitments made by ISA during the United Nations Ocean Conference in 2017 and renewed at the 2022 Ocean Conference to advance the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14 to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources (#OceanAction40845).
