The International Seabed Authority (ISA) will hold a workshop on the ‘Development of Standards and Guidelines for the mining code’ in partnership with the Governments of the Republic of South Africa and the United Kingdom at the OR Tambo Conference Centre in Pretoria from 13 to 17 May 2019.

Held over five days, the first part of the workshop from 13-15 May will feature presentations and panel discussions focused on drawing up a list of performance and procedure-related standards relevant to activities in the international deep seabed area. The expected outcome is to establish a process for the development of standards for exploitation activities in this area.

The second part of the workshop to be held from 16-17 May, will consist of a smaller working group meeting that is tasked with the responsibility of drafting the report of the workshop.

A wide range of experts are expected to attend including representatives from Member States, members of the Legal and Technical Commission, contractors, and Observers from NGOs and intergovernmental organisations.
