ISA and Japan host international scientific workshop for the development of a regional environmental management plan for the Northwest Pacific

Tokyo, Japan – The International Seabed Authority (ISA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan, Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security, Deep Ocean Resources Development Co. Ltd. and the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, opened today the third  international expert workshop for the development of a regional environmental management plan (REMP) for the Area of the Northwest Pacific Ocean.

Board of ISA Partnership Fund grants 552,500 USD to bolster deep-sea research, innovation, and capacity development in Africa, the Caribbean and the Indian Ocean

The Board of the Partnership Fund of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) approved five new projects for a total value of 552,500 USD during its second meeting held on 29 January 2024 to support deep-sea research, innovation and capacity development in Africa, the Caribbean and the Indian Ocean. These projects represent the second batch of initiatives supported by the ISA Partnership Fund (ISAPF), following its establishment in August 2022 by the ISA Assembly.

Message of the ISA Secretary-General on the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2024

As we mark the International Day of Women and Girls in Science on 11 February, it brings me immense pride to reflect on the strides we have made towards fostering inclusivity and empowering women from the realm of deep-sea research. The International Seabed Authority (ISA) has been at the forefront of advocating for gender equality in this field, as demonstrated by our Voluntary Commitment “Advancing women’s empowerment in marine scientific research” (#OceanAction 40786), registered at the 2017 UN Ocean Conference and renewed in 2022.

ISA launches global Capacity Development Alumni Network in support of furthering the long-term impact of strengthened capacities in deep ocean affairs

Today, 5 February 2024, the Secretariat of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) has formally launched the ISA Capacity Development Alumni Network (iCAN) to bolster human resource development, monitor the impact of training provided through the entire spectrum of activities carried in the international seabed area and facilitate collaboration among ISA’s trainees.

Call for proposals for a Programme Assistant (Marine Environment) at the International Seabed Authority

The Secretariat of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) is seeking a programme assistant (Marine Environment) with requisite experience to provide administrative and technical assistance to support the dissemination of outputs from ongoing activities. The programme assistant should also contribute to the development of relevant activities being implemented by the ISA Secretariat in 2024.

ISA and the National Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries of Egypt sign a landmark memorandum of understanding in support of the global deep-sea research agenda

The International Seabed Authority (ISA) and the National Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries (NIOF) of Egypt have officially signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a Joint Regional Training and Research Centre (JTRC) in Alexandria, Egypt. This significant event marks the first visit of the ISA Secretary-General to Egypt and a new era of collaboration and development in marine science and technology in the Middle East and Africa.

ISA’s Legal and Technical Commission announces the selection of one (1) candidate to benefit from French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea (Ifremer) internship opportunity

On 8 January 2024, the Legal and Technical Commission of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) confirmed the selection of one (1) candidate from a developing State to benefit from an internship opportunity provided by French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea (Ifremer) in accordance with its obligations under its exploration contract for polymetallic sulphides with ISA.
